Europe: Day 9, May 9, Lake Garda, Verona, Italy

We traveled from Austria to northern Italy through the Dolomite mountains. I think they are part of the Alps.  They are beautiful. We visited Lake Garda, a big lake.  It is a resort area and very pretty.

Everywhere we've been has been pretty.  Some of the cities we have visited have old Roman walls around the old city. These are not wimpy walls, but 20 or more feet high and 6 or 8 feet thick.  Rothenburg had such a wall.  We saw it a few days ago.  Today we visited Verona, Italy.  Verona has a wall around it also.  It is amazing to see them, walk on top of them, and realize how old they are.

Verona is the city of the Montegues and Capulets.  You may remember these were feuding families whose son and daughter fell for each other in a story told by William Shakespeare. In case you don't remember, their names were Romeo and Juliet. We saw the balcony where Romeo supposedly watched Juliet.
Here we are in front of Juliette's balcony.
                                   She wasn't there today.

Verona has a huge coliseum, not as big as the the one in Rome, but huge nonetheless  I haven't seen the one in Rome, but the Verona one is supposed to be in better shape and is still used occasionally. It seats 25.000 people. These old things fascinate me.

There was a tall tower in Verona that we climbed. It had 368 steps. Our legs were a little like jello by the time we got back down. It has bells that toll on the hour, and were, or are, used to warn of fires and to call the citizens to arms to defend the city.  Our guess is that the call to arms is not something it is used for today.  Whatever it's purpose, it provides a heck of a view from the top. It has an elevator but we decided we needed to walk off the gelato and pastries we keep finding.

Tonight we stay in Hotel Eden in Castel d'Ario, Italy.
