Day 4, part 2....The turtle experience

Kristi, Camryn and I had arranged a tour to go see the sea turtles on La Flor beach.  The boys decided to stay home after their long day at the beach.  The turtles come up on shore at night to lay their eggs and so that is when you can see them.   We got to La Flor beach at about 8:00pm and were led to the beach by the tour guide who had a flashlight.  It was amazing.  There were sea turtles everywhere.  They were digging holes and laying their eggs in them.  We were told that each turtle lays up to 100 eggs and buries them in the sand.  After awhile we discovered there were also baby turtles crawling around everywhere.  They had already hatched out of previous eggs that had been laid.  Here is some information that I found about this event.

La Flor beach - Nicaragua

South of San Juan del SurLa Flor is one of the most beautiful beaches on the pacific coast of Nicaragua. There are no hotels or restaurants next to. It's necessary to take food and drink along when paying a visit to it.
It's however possibile to go camping there for 8$. The main attraction there is the egg laying season, from July to February for thousand of paslamas Turtles.
The egg laying reaches it's maximum in between August and Novembre These turtles lay roughly 100 eggs and burry them under the sand so that the sun keeps them warm. The eggs which find themselves in the most hot part of the nest, will turn out female, the others males. The young, that hatch after 7 weeks, have to find a lot of energy to cross that stretch of beach to the sea to keep away from the dangers of preying animals and also from mankind.

Here are a couple of pictures that I took.  It was very hard to get a picture in the dark.  They had told us to turn off our flash setting on our cameras.

It was definitely worth the drive to go see these turtles.  And we found out we didn't need to worry about Jeremy, Carter and Logan at home.  They had done ok without us!!  They had brownies, cheesecake and ice cream delivered to them!!
